The Grand English Anthem at Holy Trinity
Canticum returns to Holy Trinity Sloane Square for a celebration of the English choral anthem in the splendour of this fine Victorian church. The programme offers a selection of well-loved anthems including Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens, Stanford’s For Lo, I Raise Up and Wesley’s Ascribe unto the Lord. Holy Trinity provides the perfect setting for this grandiloquent music, some dating from the time of its construction, as the July evening sun illuminates its noted stained glass windows. These works will also make good use of the church’s recently-restored organ with its 71 stops and 4,200 pipes.
The programme also features music by the contemporary English composer Christopher Wright. Canticum recorded a début CD of Christopher’s choral works last year. Several of these were sung for the first time in the recording sessions, and the concert will include premiere performances as we officially launch the CD.
