Ave Maris Stella
St Sophia’s Cathedral
Canticum returns to St. Sophia’s, the magnificent Greek Orthodox cathedral in Bayswater, after a gap of just over three years. Last time the programme was built round Victoria’s Missa Salve Regina, interspersed with pieces by John Tavener and Arvo Pärt.
This time the core work is another Renaissance masterpiece, Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli. Each section of the Mass, the most famous of more than 100 that he wrote, will be flanked by Marian motets from the 19th and 20th centuries, from Anton Brucker to Franz Biebl.
This will be an evening of glorious sound in the grand acoustic of a building noted for its intricate marble mosaics. A feast for ear and eye.
